Backup Exec 2010 R2 – Remote Agent Install Error Code 1603

While onsite trying to remotely push a Backup Exec 2010 R2 remote agent, we were getting a lot of the “error code 1603″ messages, which stated:
“Error connecting to the remote server. Ensure the server is available, has WMI enabled, and is not blocked by a firewall. 1603.”

It seems like this is the likely problem, mentioned in the below Symantec technote:
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH128062

Our workaround was to just install the client manually on each server that wouldn’t connect, instead of going through all the steps mentioned in the above technote.

Virtual Vault thresholds to trigger Vault Cache synchronization

When the Virtual Vault policy is set to allow users to move or copy items from their mailboxes into Virtual Vault to archive them, the items exist only on the user’s computer until they are archived by Vault Cache synchronization. Two new Virtual Vault advanced settings in the Exchange desktop policy let you control when Vault Cache synchronization occurs, so you can minimize the risk of data loss.

The settings are Threshold number of items to trigger synchronization and Threshold total size of items to trigger synchronization. They specify thresholds for the number and total size of pending archive items in Virtual Vault. Each setting triggers an automatic Vault Cache synchronization if it is reached or exceeded. By default, the threshold settings are not active.

For more information, see the Setting up Vault Cache and Virtual Vault chapter in the Setting up Exchange Server Archiving manual.

SharePoint Server archiving

The following SharePoint Server archiving features are new for Enterprise Vault 9.0:

  • Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Foundation Server 2010 are now supported.
  • Shortcuts can now be deleted based on creation date. Shortcut deletion is specified at the SharePoint Policy level. <!–
  • A SharePoint shortcut management utility is provided that enables you to do the following:
    • Upgrade existing SharePoint shortcuts to new seamless shortcuts
    • Perform bulk restores of shortcuts

    –>

  • Archiving of InfoPath forms and forms libraries is now supported.
  • The minimum SharePoint archiving target version is now SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007).

Domino Server archiving

Enterprise Vault 9.0 includes the following new Domino archiving features:

  • Archiving from mail-in databases.
  • Automatic deletion of shortcuts as follows:
    • Deletion based on shortcut age.
    • Deletion of orphaned shortcuts. These are shortcuts that no longer have corresponding archived items. Typically the archived items have been deleted by users or storage expiry.
    • Deletion of shortcuts because the retention period has elapsed. The corresponding archived items may be removed by storage expiry. It is possible to delete the shortcuts without deleting the archived items.
  • Domino 8.5.1 and Notes 8.5.1 are now fully supported, as follows:
    • Support for Notes 8.5.1 and iNotes 8.5.1 clients.
    • Support for Domino 8.5.1 and Notes 8.5.1 on an Enterprise Vault Domino Gateway.
    • Support for Notes 8.5.1 mail templates.
    • Domino 8.5.1 was already supported as an archiving target.
  • An Enterprise Vault Domino Gateway can run Windows Server 2008 64-bit, Domino 8.5 or later (32-bit only) and Lotus Notes 8.5 or later.

File System Archiving

Bulk recall of files using FSAUtility

FSAUtility includes a new -b option to perform bulk recall of files corresponding to placeholders in a folder or volume. This option also allows you perform a bulk recall of files recursively from subfolders.

Migration of placeholders using FSAUtility

FSAUtility includes a new -pm option to migrate placeholders and archive points from a source folder structure to a destination folder structure. The option is intended for file server consolidations and migrations. Placeholders are moved between volumes or file servers. The option does not move any archived data. This allows for efficient migrations.

Do not use the -pm option when the movement of archived data is required. Use the existing -m option if you want to move archives, consolidate vault stores, or align archives with file servers.

Note: We strongly recommend that when you use the -pm option you specify a destination path that has never been archived from. No archive points should exist on the destination folder structure. Otherwise a source archive point can be merged with a destination archive point. A merge of archive points can result in a split archive, in which the files with the migrated placeholders are in a different vault store from the other archived files. Split archives should be avoided.

For additional restrictions that apply to FSAUtility, see File System Archiving issues.

FSAUndelete utility

FSAUndelete is a new command line utility that cancels the permanent deletion of the archived items for specified placeholders, or for all of the placeholders in a specified folder of a file server.

For more information, see the chapter on FSAUndelete in the Utilities guide.

Enterprise Vault Reporting and FSA Reporting

Support is now provided for the coexistence of non-Enterprise Vault reports with Enterprise Vault Reporting on the same Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services server.

FSA Reporting includes several changes to improve scalability and performance. The changes include:

  • Support for multiple FSA Reporting databases.
  • Support for the configuration of multiple proxy servers for data collection from non-Windows file servers. You can now use networked Windows computers and Windows file server archiving targets as proxy servers, in addition to Enterprise Vault servers.
  • Faster report generation.

New and updated wizards provide guided workflow for the configuration of FSA Reporting, including the assignment of FSA Reporting databases and proxy servers to file server targets.

For more information, see the Reporting guide.

Mac OS X support

You can now use the Enterprise Vault Client for Mac OS X with the following versions of Mac OS X:

  • Mac OS X version 10.5 (Leopard)
  • Mac OS X version 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition

Enterprise Vault 9.0 includes client access for Microsoft Entourage 2008 Web Services Edition. Users can now access archived information and search using the Enterprise Vault Client for Mac OS X.

Enterprise Vault Discovery Collector

Enterprise Vault 9.0 supports Enterprise Vault Discovery Collector, an add-on for Enterprise Vault that addresses your eDiscovery needs during the identification, collection, and preservation phases of eDiscovery. Discovery Collector extends indexing and classification of data beyond the archive, enabling targeted collection and preservation of active content from laptops and desktops, network servers, storage systems, and application repositories. Discovery Collector allows active content collected from unmanaged content stores to be stored for preservation in Enterprise Vault, leveraging the storage benefits of Enterprise Vault and the discovery analysis and review capabilities of Discovery Accelerator.

Full documentation for Discovery Collector is included with the product.

Symantec NetBackup 7 – Incorrect Disk Pool Available Space with Media Server Deduplication Puredisk Disk Pool

I ran across this bug onsite at a customer and after some searching, I found out it is a bug that has a hotfix that fixes the issue. It will also be included in NetBackup v7.0.1 which is due out anytime.

Problem: The disk pools available space isn’t being reported correctly, so NetBackup thinks that the disk pool is full and backups to that disk pool results in “Status 129″ errors (Disk pool full, insufficent disk space). Even after expiring images, the disk capacity is still full.

Steps Taken: I thought at first that perhaps NetBackup wasn’t “cleaning up” the images appropriately or that perhaps NetBackup was flagging the images to be cleaned but the Puredisk Deduplication Engine (PDDE) wasn’t cleaning up the data correctly, since I’ve seen that issue with standalone Puredisk nodes before. So I performed an expiration and cleanup manually by following the steps below:

Here’s how to manually force the clean up of NetBackup images after expiring them from the catalog:
install_pathNetBackupbinadmincmdnbdelete -allvolumes -force
install_pathNetBackupbinadmincmdbpimage -cleanup -allclient

In Media Server Deduplication Pool environments, wait for PDDE to run its maintenance tasks for cleanup to see the disk space get cleaned.
Or you can run them manually;
install_pathVeritaspddecrcontrol.exe –processqueue
install_pathVeritaspddecrcollect -v -m +1,+2 –noreport

Resolution: In my case, manually executing the cleanup didn’t result in additional disk space available. This is a known bug which has a patch that can be downloaded and applied to your Master and Media servers. Please see this technote article: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/350190.htm

After applying the patch, the disk pools now show the correct available space and backups are working again!

Symantec NetBackup – Cannot Use Staged Capacity Managed Option in a Storage Lifecycle Policies (SLP) with Puredisk

When using a NetBackup Storage Lifecycle Policy (SLP) with a Puredisk Storage Unit, you cannot select the "Staged Capacity Managed" retention type. This article explains why that is the case.

Staged Capacity Managed Option

media_1279224700469.png

In a nutshell, using the “Capacity Managed” option within a Storage Lifecycle Policy (SLP) with a Puredisk storage unit is not possible. The option is even greyed out when pointing it to a Puredisk storage unit, as shown in the above screenshot.

That kind of made sense to me, but kind of didn’t. So after researching that question through multiple documents and training guides, I finally found the answer in the “Help” button on the above screen (in all places!). It said:

Staged capacity managed is selectable for any disk storage unit that is allowed in a lifecycle. However, for the disk types that support single-instance store (SIS), Staged capacity managed functions to various degrees. In order for Staged capacity managed to operate, NetBackup must know how much space a backup image uses. With SIS enabled on the storage unit, NetBackup cannot know exactly how much space a particular backup image occupies.

The following storage unit configurations use SIS:
PureDisk storage units
NearStore storage units that have either the Enable file system export option enabled or the Enable block sharing option enabled.
Some OpenStorage storage units, depending on the vendor characteristics.

So that’s why we can’t use Capacity Managed SLP’s with a Puredisk based storage unit.

Release: Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 for EV, CA and DA is now available

Symantec has released Service Pack 4 for Enterprise Vault 8.0, Discovery Accelerator 8.0 and Compliance Accelerator 8.0 on April 21, 2010.

This release should be considered a recommended update for Enterprise Vault.

Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 documentation-    http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/350758
Compliance Accelerator 8.0 SP4 documentation –  http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/350770
Discovery Accelerator 8.0 SP4 documentation –  http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/350771

How can Symantec Enterprise Vault customers access this release?

Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP 4 is a full product release and can only be obtained from the Symantec Licensing Portal.  http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/292866

Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 provides the following new features:

·        Move Archive Wizard

Enterprise Vault’s new Move Archive wizard lets you move content from existing mailbox archives and journal archives to new archives or existing archives in other vault stores. You can use the wizard to move archives between vault stores in one site and, in the case of mailbox archives, between two sites. This includes moves between two sites that are controlled by different Enterprise Vault directories.

Move Archive supports the move of archives between source and destination servers that are running Enterprise Vault 8.0 SP4 or later.

Before you start, read the section called Moving archives in the Administrator’s Guide for detailed information about this new feature.

  • System Status Displays in the Vault Administration Console (VAC)

The Enterprise Vault Administration Console now includes a Status display that shows the results of the most recent monitoring checks.

Enterprise Vault automatically runs checks to monitor the health of the Enterprise Vault system. If any check finds a problem Enterprise Vault displays an alert in the Status pane of the Administration Console.

The Status display provides the quickest way for you to check the health of the Enterprise Vault system. There is help on how to fix each problem that is shown in the Status display.

The monitoring checks that System Status uses are those that are enabled on the Monitoring tab of the Site properties. You can customize the monitoring checks as required on the Monitoring tab.

See the ‘Automatic Monitoring’ chapter in the Administrator’s Guide.

Note that the System Status display requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or a later service pack to be installed on the computer that is running the Administration Console. There is no support for .NET Framework 4

·    Enterprise Vault Online display in the Vault Administration Console (VAC)

The Enterprise Vault Administration Console now includes ‘Enterprise Vault Online’ in the tree view.

Enterprise Vault Online provides a page with links to many online Enterprise Vault resources, including the Enterprise Vault Compatibility Charts, white papers, data sheets, a knowledge base, and discussion forums.

Use Enterprise Vault Online as a quick means to find information about Enterprise Vault

  • Enterprise Vault proxy server for Outlook Anywhere client connections

You can now use an Enterprise Vault server as a proxy server for Enterprise Vault requests from Outlook Anywhere clients. The Enterprise Vault proxy server forwards Enterprise Vault requests to the Enterprise Vault server that hosts the archive. An Enterprise Vault proxy server is useful in the following situations:

  • If you do not want to publish multiple Enterprise Vault servers to external users.
  • If you want to publish separate URLs for external and internal Enterprise Vault users.

Note The Enterprise Vault proxy server can only be used to manage connections from Outlook Anywhere clients. It cannot be used for other types of connections, such as OWA.

The parameters shown are not the default but reflect a configuration that seems to be optimal for test environment. Your mileage may vary.
These specific parameters have been changed from the default
Client Name Selection determines how Virtual Machines are identified to Netbackup.  VM Display name option matches the VM name as identified in vCenter
Transfer type determines how VM data is transfered to Netbackup host.  The san option uses Fibre Channel or iSCSI SAN (Note:, LUNs containing VMWare Data Stored must be presented to Netbackup host).  The nbd option resorts to a network copy, should the san option fail.
Existing snapshot handling, when set to Remove NBU, will remove stray NetBackup snapshots from VMs if encountered but ignore all other snapshots.
