I just bought a external drive too, and formatted it as a ExFAT drive directly from my iMac (Mid 2010). And it works great on the Mac. I have still to try connecting it to a PC and then back to the Mac again, but since i formatted it with the iMac, i think it should be ok?

My compliments on your post – very cleanly done with the screen shots and all. Although I already knew about and use NTFS-3G, I was looking for answers as to whether 10.6 would work with exfat or not – thanks for saving me the time of doing this myself!
